Abstract:

With the increasing pollution of surface water bodies and the need for continuous monitoring of water quality to protect the water resources, this study aims to design the proper water quality monitoring network that can be used by practitioners such as regulating bodies like pollution control boards in India. Thus, the study focuses on developing a rapid water quality monitoring system for the Warana River in Maharashtra. As a part of this, this report briefly gives a broad literature review on various monitoring objectives and network design methods studied by multiple researchers. It includes the literature review on selecting variables for monitoring and decision-making factors on sampling frequency. In line with the literature, the current study designs probable monitoring points on the Warana River and its tributaries after delineating the catchment properties. GIS layers for various characteristics of the Warana basin relevant to the river's water quality are developed using QGIS. The study also focused on using advanced systems such as drone-based sampling for cost and time reduction and a few in-situ sensors for rapid sampling and testing. This covers the literature on different samplers and a market analysis of available sensors for testing the water quality.
