The dialogue will explore the transformative potential of Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) in driving sustainable development across India and Africa. Drawing on real-time projects, it will highlight the challenges and opportunities in expanding energy access through mini-grids, productive use technologies, and clean cooking solutions. The session will cover key obstacles such as financing, policy barriers, and technology adoption while showcasing successful models that have enhanced rural livelihoods. Demand Stimulation studies on the mini-grids in Zambia and deployment of 180+ Solar and BESS-powered productive use solutions in Meghalaya and Nagaland will be discussed through the lens of financing, technology compatibility, business model innovation, and market development. Participants will gain practical insights into how DRE can address energy poverty and catalyze socio-economic development in underserved communities across both regions.

About Speaker: 

Nitin Akhade is the Executive Director of Energy Access and Livelihoods at Customized Energy Solutions, leading the Customized Applications for Rural Economies (CAREs) initiative. With over 12 years of experience, he specializes in energy access, developing sustainable business models, and fostering market linkages for rural communities in India and Africa. He also serves as Vice Chairperson for the Clean Energy Access Network. Nitin holds dual master's degrees in Nuclear Engineering from Spain and France and has worked on diverse projects related to renewable energy, clean cooking, and safety assessments for nuclear power plants.
