
Project Background
Yuva Mitra NGO in Sinnar taluka, Nashik district has carried out regeneration of existing British period Diversion based Irrigation Systems (DBI) on the river Devanadi through a from Tata Trust over the past two years. A Program, Technical and Institutional review of the same was carried out by Deloitte for Tata Trusts. The report was submitted in August 2016.
Previously, Technology and Development Solutions Cell (TDSC) at the Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA) at IIT Bombay had shown an interest in carrying out a process review, utilization and impact assessment of the same, involving mapping, water flow estimations, beneficiary socio-economic analysis, etc. The main high-level priority recommendations by Deloitte are also on the same lines and thus, TDSC is once again proposing certain activities, to be jointly implemented by TDSC and Yuva-Mitra in the region.
Objectives of engagement:
- Implementing high priority technical recommendations from a review by Deloitte.
- Impact assessment of DBI works already implemented.
- Process review and recommendations for planning, design and implementation of future DBI works.
The deliverables over the engagement are expected to be:
- Mapping of all structures related to DBI and Devnadi in the area of work of yuva Mitra.
- Study of hydrology: Water availability, crop water demand, water balance, groundwater model.
- Socio- economic impact analysis of DBI revival.
- Command area mapping, beneficiary mapping.
- Quantifying increase in water availability, irrigation.
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of WUAs formed.
- A documented process describing sampling technique and questionnaires and checklists used to conduct a socio-economic impact analysis of such interventions.
- History of the Devnadi DBI, Stakeholder analysis, changes in cropping patterns, carrying capacity, Cost benefit analysis, new sites potential.
Phase one started from 1st October 2016, with a limited scope of mapping of river and DBI structure, command mapping,well monitoring and Socio-economic impact analysis survey in 2 villages. This work is being executed jointly by TDSC team and CTARA MTech and PhD students.
