Title:  Strengthening the ESG Ecosystem: Rethinking Practices to Support Vulnerable Stakeholders in India

Guides: Prof. Bakul Rao

RPC Members: Prof. Anand Rao, Prof. Ajay Deshpande (CPS)

Venue: Conference room No. 1 (Ctara Office) Abstract:

This research aims to delve into the intricacies of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) implementation in India, with a particular focus on the challenges and opportunities it presents for weaker stakeholder groups, including communities, workers, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Despite the potential of ESG/BRSR to drive sustainable development and ensure corporate accountability, its implementation often overlooks the needs and concerns of these critical groups. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of Social Impact Assessments (SIAs), exploring the accessibility and efficacy of corporate grievance redressal mechanisms, and understanding the barriers SMEs face in complying with ESG standards.

Through a comprehensive analysis, the research will assess how current ESG/BRSR practices impact communities affected by industry initiatives, analyze the changes in dispute resolution mechanisms brought about by new labour laws and explore support mechanisms to enable SMEs to adopt sustainable practices. The ethical imperative to prioritise the well-being of weaker stakeholders underpins this research, addressing a significant gap in the existing literature and contributing to a more inclusive ESG approach to sustainable development in India.

The outcomes of this study shall hold considerable significance for policymakers, businesses, and civil society organizations by providing insights and recommendations for more inclusive and effective ESG/BRSR practices. By highlighting the challenges of weaker stakeholders and proposing actionable solutions, this research endeavours to ensure that ESG/BRSR implementation in India advances sustainable development and promotes social justice and equity, benefiting all sections of society.
