Title: Bamboo Structure for Rural Infrastructure

Supervisor: Prof. Chaaruchandra Korde

RPC Members: Prof. Pennan Chinnasamy, Prof. Yogesh Desai

Abstract:

Rural infrastructure development is uneven globally, with developing regions often lacking necessities. Funding shortages, climate change, and policy gaps hinder progress. However, renewable energy, smart agriculture, and digital technologies offer solutions. Sustainable rural development, fueled by public and private investment, is vital for bridging infrastructure gaps and improving livelihoods.

Bamboo, a readily available natural material, offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative. Its rapid growth, carbon sequestration, high strength-to-weight ratio, flexibility, and earthquake resistance make it ideal for green construction. Bamboo structures worldwide showcase its versatility. Local availability can generate employment, addressing societal concerns. While susceptible to pests and moisture, preservation techniques and engineered bamboo products improve durability. A strong bamboo ecosystem and supply chain are essential.

Engineered bamboo portal frames are eco-friendly and lightweight, suitable for rural housing, farm buildings, and storage. Research focuses on material testing and joint performance. Applications include housing, livestock shelters, and agricultural units. While promising, challenges like tapering sections and specialized joinery exist. Field demonstrations and technology dissemination are crucial. Addressing these limitations through improved treatment and design, coupled with supportive policies, will solidify bamboo's role in resilient and cost-effective rural infrastructure.
