Abstract:

Agriculture sector consumes 84 per cent water in India and for monitoring water use, the data of area irrigated, crop type, crop yield etc. is important. This data is required by the Government, private industry, consumers, academicians, and policy makers. In the 1st Annual Progress Seminar (APS), various approaches for crop and area mapping, their advantages and limitations were discussed and it was concluded that remote sensing, drone survey and crowd sourcing are useful for agriculture mapping. It was decided to propose methodology for synergizing all these methods (satellite, drone, crowdsourcing) and accordingly, the literature review has been carried out. In the 2nd APS, the site for carrying out the research is finalized based on nine-point analysis. Out of Bhigwan, Loni Devkar, Malthan and Rajegaon villages, it was found that Loni Devkar village suits the criteria and hence this village is selected for further study. In the 3rd APS, three sets of data are collected viz., Government data, Drone survey data, and Crowd sourced data.

The fourth set of data i.e., satellite-based data for Loni Devkar village is collected and processed and results will be presented in 4th APS. The analysis of data is carried out and it is observed that Drone based data is most accurate, but it is costly to collect, difficult to store and distribute. There are issues in representation of Government data, which is checked through ground truthing. The analysis of results suggests that there is a need of a methodology which can provide accurate crop mapping with minimum inputs and resources. In this APS, introduction to methodology of synergised crop mapping will be presented based on collected data sets. Synergized mapping consists of a combination of multi-sourced data i.e., satellite imageries, drone survey, crowd sourcing and Government data for effective crop mapping.
