Abstract:

Undernutrition is among the top 6 risk factors for death in India. Childhood undernutrition is directly associated with child morbidity and mortality because it compromises the immune function; exacerbates vulnerability to infectious diseases, and speeds up the progression, severity, and period of the disease. As per CNNS 2019 data, the diet of 6 to 23 month old Indian children is mainly cereal-based and it lacks important macronutrients and micronutrients; especially type II micronutrients which they can only get through the dietary consumption. Evidence suggests that current supplementation and fortification practices alone may make a difference in reducing the undernutrition in children. Additionally, majority of the supplements are fortified with chemical salts and are expensive; may not reach to the needy. To solve this problem, plant-based, affordable nutritious sprinkler formulation has been developed. The sprinkler contains macronutrients and micronutrients such as protein, lipid, carbohydrate (mostly fibers), minerals, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, choline, folate and antioxidants. To obtain maximum intestinal absorption of these nutrients, various antinutrient reduction strategies has been employed while processing the ingredients. Moreover, the formulation is safe for at least 6 months at regular (Temperature 28℃ and Relative Humidity = 65%) and extreme environmental conditions (Temperature 45℃ and Relative Humidity = 90%) as per shelf life analysis. The allergen analysis suggest that that the sprinkler does not contain gluten and soy allergen. Additionally, the formulation is free from >190 chemical residues. In order to understand the efficacy of the product, comparative analysis has been done with 4 successful market products in the same category (plant-based supplements) that includes True Vital sprouted sadhu maavu, Early Foods sadhu maavu, Ever Maa Super Seven Cereal, Tummy Friendly Foods sadhu maavu. The analysis suggests that sprinkler formulation is quite superior in terms of nutrients and mineral bioavailability. To obtain real-time feedback from the consumer, sensory analysis will be done in Surgana, Nashik very soon wherein 50 participants (Mother and children) will be involved. To understand the technical feasibility and economic viability of the production process of sprinkler, techno economic analysis will be done as a last objective of the research work.
