Abstract:

The trajectory of human civilization has been consistently intertwined with the presence of infectious diseases, demonstrating a continuous interplay across epochs of biological, technological, and social evolution. In the 21st century, the escalating challenge of infectious diseases is fueled by globalization, exponential increase in international travel and trade, socioeconomic inequalities, and the threat of biological terrorism, requiring a public health response from the local to global levels. The case of dengue fever exemplifies the need for a heightened focus on the complex conditions that need to be included in public health surveillance efforts, rendered particularly salient by the absence of a widely available vaccine and specific therapeutic measures for clinical management. The worldwide spread of dengue is significantly exacerbated by globalization and underlying socioeconomic disparities. The dominant biomedical focus limits the building of a comprehensive understanding of the surveillance system's potential efficacy in managing the complexities of dengue disease. Adopting an institutional perspective, the study investigates the efficacy of the surveillance system in dengue prevention and control efforts within a resource-constrained setting of the public health system in India. It also tries to identify areas of improvement required to better align outputs from this system in generating relevant policy and practice interventions.
