Abstract:

India produces 26.91 million metric tonnes of onions annually, and approximately 70% of this product is kept in storage for 6 to 8 months. Unfortunately, poor storage techniques result in 30–40% harvest loss where physiological weight loss, sprouting, and rotting occur. Onion waste is a rich source of bioactive substances such as phenols, flavonoids, and flavonol; onion wastes are still neglected. Therefore, valorizing onion waste and its extracts for the biomedical and pharmaceutical areas may be an appropriate alternative to minimize environmental harm from the waste. It will offer a practical, affordable alternative for producing dietary supplements or herbal medications, esp. in the climate change era when there is a growing interest in the sustainable use of resources and the reduction of adverse environmental impacts.
