Title: Agriculture Area and Crop Synergized Mapping Using Satellites, Drones and Crowd Sourcing in Maharashtra

Abstract:

Agriculture sector consumes 84 per cent water in India and for monitoring water use, the data of area irrigated, crop type, crop yield etc. is important. This data is required by the Government, private industry, consumers, academicians and policy makers. In the first Annual Progress Seminar (APS), various approaches for crop mapping, their advantages and limitations were discussed and it was concluded that remote sensing, drone survey and crowd sourcing are useful for agriculture mapping. It was decided to propose methodology for synergizing all these methods (satellite, drone, crowdsourcing) and accordingly, the literature review has been carried out. In the present report, an attempt has been made to finalise the site for carrying out the research. Review of various villages under Ujjani (Bhima) Irrigation project situated in Pune and Solapur district of Maharashtra state carried out and four villages were finalised for carrying out nine-point analysis in order to shortlist a single village. Out of Bhigwan, Loni Devkar, Malthan and Rajegaon villages, it was found that Loni Devkar village suits the criteria and hence this village is selected for further study. The total geographical area of Loni Devkar village is 1457.12 ha having total population of 2667 persons as per 2011 census. Agriculture is a major activity and about 70 percent of the geographical area is under cultivation. As per 2020-21 crop data, it is observed that vegetables and sugarcane are major crops in the village covering about 47.77 and 36.39 percent area respectively. Pomegranate (6.35%), other fruit bearing crops (2.63%) , fodder crops (2.15%) and other crops (15.04%) are grown in the Loni Devkar village (Agriculture Department, 2020). The main source for irrigation is wells and lift from Ujjani reservoir. The Loni Devkar village falls under the rain shadow zone of Maharashtra state and is classified as a drought prone area having average annual rainfall less than 500 mm.
