Abstract:

Plants produce diverse peptides and proteins as a part of their innate defense system to fight pathogens and exhibit cell division control and reproductive mechanism. These peptides serve specific functions in plants and have the potential to be used as functional foods, therapeutics, antimicrobials, pesticides, and diagnostics. One such group of plant peptides is cyclotides which are plant cyclic peptides. These peptides and related peptides have been identified in several plant species in silico, but only some plant species have been explored for their presence. The aim of our research project is to explore the general plant species (used as food) and their byproducts for the presence of cyclotides. The identified peptides will be tested for bioactivities/ functional properties to find suitable food and non-food applications.
