Abstract:

Green leafy vegetables (GLVs) play a vital role in nutritional security, rural livelihoods, and agricultural diversification in India. Although Maharashtra is one of India’s leading horticultural states, GLV cultivation, especially among small and marginal farmers, remains constrained by limited adoption of improved tools and scientific practices.

This study assessed the tools, implements, and technological practices employed in the production of five selected GLVs: spinach (Palak), fenugreek (Methi), coriander, red amaranth (Laal Maath), and green amaranth (Nigdi Maath)  in Dapoli taluka, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. The study aimed to: (i) profile respondents’ socio-economic characteristics; (ii) document tools and implements used across crop production stages; (iii) evaluate technological practices adopted; (iv) assess the extent of technology adoption and existing gaps; (v) identify constraints to adoption; and (vi) recommend suitable interventions.

Primary data were collected from 20 small and marginal farmer respondents through structured interview schedules, field observations, and participatory interactions, and analysed using descriptive statistics. Major constraints identified include labour scarcity and rising wage costs, high initial investment barriers to improved technologies, inadequate extension outreach, climate variability (especially monsoon-related crop damage, cited by 80% of respondents, for which no technological mitigation was in use), and low technology awareness. The study recommends demonstration-based and digital extension, development of low-cost monsoon-protection structures for GLV plots, promotion of custom hiring centres, and formalisation of existing organic input practices.
